Boots Migraine Relief Review

Editor's Rating:

This is a review of Boots’ Migraine Relief 50mg Tablets. Boots maintains that these tablets rapidly relieve the symptoms of a migraine within 30 minutes, as well as any sensitivity to light or feeling sick, by reducing the swelling of blood vessels in the head. Read on to learn more about these tablets, their ingredients, and our opinion of whether this is the right product for your needs.

This product contains two tablets of:

  • Sumatriptan 50 mg
  • lactose monohydrate
  • croscarmellose sodium
  • microcrystalline cellulose
  • silica colloidal anhydrous
  • magnesium stearate

The coating of the tablet contains:

  • Opadry peach (containing hypromellose, titanium dioxide (E171) lactose monohydrate, macrogol, glycerol triacetate, iron oxide red (E172), iron oxide yellow (E172), iron oxide black (E172))

The company recommends taking the tablet with water. Do not take a second tablet if you do not feel any relief from the first.

The product is not suitable for children under 18 years or adults over 65 years.

Only take these tablets if you have been diagnosed with migraine by a doctor or pharmacist. For adults over 18 and under 65 years they recommend taking 1 tablet with water as soon as possible after experiencing symptoms of migraine (not before feeling symptoms – this medicine is not preventative) then, if necessary taking another 1 tablet after 2 hours, not exceeding 2 tablets in 24 hours. Leave at least 2 hours between doses.

The pack contains 2 tablets, which would be sufficient for treating 24 hours of constant migraine.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects from this product are rare, but include some severe allergic reactions (red, raised, itchy skin rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, neck, tongue or throat), fits, heart problems, and poor circulation to the hands and feet. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms. Other side effects include a tingling sensation, dizziness, sleepiness, uncontrollable movement of the eyes, changes in heartbeat, changes in blood pressure, shortness of breath, feeling sick, joint or muscle pains, diarrhoea, sweating, or a feeling of heaviness. Consult your doctor if these side effects become severe. We recommend that you strictly follow the dosage advised to minimise the chances of these side effects.

Do not take these tablets if you have had an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients or sulphonamide antibiotics, or if you have had a heart attack, stroke or mini-stroke, or if you have any heart, liver or kidney problems, or if you have epilepsy. Also do not take these tablets if you are taking Ergotamine or methylsergide, other 5HT1 agonists (“triptans‟) for migraine, or monoamine oxidase inhibitors for depression.

Consult your doctor before taking this product if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you are planning to become pregnant.

You should consult your doctor if the symptoms of migraine persist or worsen, or if you take more than 2 tablets.

Each box containing 2 tablets costs $13.

The company allows you to return any unwanted items free of charge within 28 days of receiving your order for a refund/replacement, provided that they are unused and within their original packaging, though they make it clear that they reserve the right to refuse an exchange/refund if goods are not in a resalable condition or otherwise damaged. We could not find any ratings or reviews of this product on the Boots website or elsewhere, though the generous returns product means you could return any unused boxes if the medicine does not work.

Boots’ Migraine Relief Tablets promise extremely quick relief. As long as you take these according to the dosage advised, and do not mix with other medicines, there should be minimal risk of side effects. Unfortunately, there are clear dangers to using this product for extended periods of time, meaning it would not be ideal for persistent migraines. Furthermore, the price for only 2 tablets is quite high and it could quickly turn expensive to use this product repeatedly.
